What is being done to save our Peatlands?

The good news: there are a few impressive organisations making valuable contributions but, as with many environmental issues, its all about education and changing behaviour.

Fancy helping us out? First let’s look at who is onboard and what they are doing….

1. Kick-started by Government Targets:

The UK Biodiversity Action Plan (1997) stated that the horticultural industry should aim for a minimum of 40% of the total market requirements for soil improvers plus growing media to be peat-free by 2005 and 90% by 2010.

The 2005 target has been met, due to efforts of suppliers, growers and retailers. The 2010 target is much more challenging!

2. Backed by the Trade, Garden Retailers, Charities and Government
Bodies:

The Growing Media InitiativeThe Growing Media Initiative, of which Vital Earth is a prestigious Gold Member, is a scheme developed by the Horticultural Trades Association in conjunction with the Growing Media Association, DIY and Garden Centre retailers, the Department for Environment, Food and Rural Affairs (defra), the RSPB and the Royal Horticultural Society to champion the peat-free cause and make that target more attainable.

Why not click on the links we provided, to see what they have been doing!

Plus let’s not forget The Peat Partnership Project, highlighted on the Natural England website and there is The Peatlands Campaign run by the Wildlife Trust and the International Peat Society.
